The Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through minister Anita Orbán, announced on Tuesday that ten Russian diplomats were ordered to leave the country. The official reason for the expulsion is related to activities considered "unacceptable for diplomats under the Vienna Convention", an indirect reference to espionage activities.
Moscow has already threatened to take "severe and painful retaliatory measures" in response to the expulsions. This reaction on the part of Russia indicates that the incident could escalate diplomatic tensions between the two countries.
The reactions in the Hungarian national press are divided. Some sectors support the government's decision, while others express concerns about the potential diplomatic and political consequences of this measure.
