Billy Joel revealed he underwent brain surgery to treat normal pressure hydrocephalus, a rare condition diagnosed in 2025. At 77 years old, the American singer stated that the procedure improved symptoms related to memory, balance, and everyday tasks. The diagnosis led him to cancel all tour commitments.
The health update was shared during an appearance on the artist's SiriusXM radio channel. Joel shared that doctors recommended implanting a shunt to drain excess fluid accumulated in the brain.
Initially, however, the singer resisted the possibility of undergoing the operation. According to him, he told doctors he would rather leave the problem alone. After researching more about the procedure, Joel decided to proceed with the surgery after recognizing it could help improve balance and memory.
