The Mayor of Angra do Heroísmo, Fátima Amorim, was present at the launch of the book "Nevoeiro e outros contos" (Fog and Other Stories), a posthumous edition of Norberto Ávila, which took place on September 9th at the Noble Hall of the Town Hall. The work, published by Companhia das Ilhas and coordinated by Paulo Enes da Silveira, was presented by Luiz Fagundes Duarte and features an Opening Note by Álamo Oliveira. The session took place precisely on the date marking the 90th anniversary of Norberto Ávila's birth, born in Angra do Heroísmo on September 9th, 1936.
The stories in this work span diverse geographical spaces, including Santa Comba Dão, Terceira Island and São Jorge Island, which the author considered his adopted "homeland." The narratives include stories about twin brothers marked by the Colonial War, a Christmas party American-style in Terceira, and police mysteries with unpredictable endings related to the fog. During the session, poems were read by Teresa Machado and Belarmino Ramos, a story was performed by both, and the Alpendre Theatre Group portrayed three characters.
Norberto Ávila was a Portuguese playwright, novelist, short story writer and poet, having attended the University of Theatre of the Nations in Paris from 1963 to 1965. He created and directed the magazine Teatro em Movimento in Lisbon, headed the Theatre Division of the State Secretariat for Culture for four years, leaving the position in 1978 to dedicate himself to playwriting. He translated important works and directed for RTP a series of fortnightly programs dedicated to Portuguese theatrical activity, called Fila 1.
His dramatic works were mostly gathered in the collection Algum Teatro, published by the National Press-House of Money in four volumes with 20 plays. These were performed in various countries, including Germany, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, South Korea, Croatia, Slovenia, Spain, France, the Netherlands, Italy, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Romania, Serbia and Switzerland. During the launch, Norberto Ávila's EXPO-BIBLIO Travel Suitcase was also on display, with personal objects and books available for consultation.
