The minimum wage in mainland Portugal is 920 euros gross per month, but this value is not the same throughout the country. In the Azores, the minimum wage is 966 euros per month, while in Madeira it reaches 980 euros, making the highest minimum wage in Portugal.
The difference between Madeira and the mainland reaches 60 euros gross per month, which corresponds to 840 euros gross annually considering the usual 14 payments. In the Azores, the difference is 46 euros per month, totaling 644 euros gross per year.
In the Azores, the higher value results from the regional increase of 5% provided for in Regional Legislative Decree No. 8/2002/A, of April 10. In Madeira, the minimum wage of 980 euros was set by Regional Legislative Decree No. 1/2026/M, of February 3, after consultation with the social partners of the region. Both values took effect on January 1, 2026.
The differences are due to the legislative powers of the autonomous regions, which can adapt the minimum remuneration to the regional reality. Madeira is thus the Portuguese region where the general minimum wage is highest in 2026, exceeding the Azores amount by 14 euros and the mainland by 60 euros.
