Ardi Rizal is an Indonesian boy who started smoking at 2 years of age, reaching about 40 cigarettes a day. The first cigarette was offered by his own father. His story gained international attention in 2010, when a video posted on YouTube showed the boy, then approximately a year and a half old, walking in diapers while smoking.
He lived in the village of Teluk Kemang, in southern Sumatra, Indonesia, where his mother, Diana, worked selling fish. The family's simple origins and easy access to cigarettes in the region help explain how the addiction began so early.
Still very young, Ardi began picking up cigarettes in the village square, developing the smoking habit at an early age. Recovery from an addiction is already an arduous path at any age, but in his case, the age at which he started smoking became an extra challenge to stop nicotine use.
