The Venezuelan government announced this Wednesday that it expects to recover "part" of the structural damage at Simón Bolívar Airport in Maiquetía, the main airport serving Caracas, during the first half of 2027. The statement was made by Transport Minister Francisco Garcés in an interview with state broadcaster Venezuelan Television (VTV).
The damage to the airport was caused by a double earthquake that occurred on June 24. The earthquake caused significant structural problems in the airport's infrastructure, affecting its normal operations.
Francisco Garcés stated that the recovery will be gradual and that only part of the facilities should be operational within the expected timeframe. The minister did not specify which areas or sections of the airport will be prioritized in the recovery.
Venezuelan authorities continue to assess the total extent of the damage caused by the earthquake and are planning the reconstruction work necessary to restore the airport's functionality.
