Orlando Mendes Viegas, former minister of Guinea-Bissau, died. Mendes Viegas was vice-president and member of the Executive Committee of the PRS, the Social Renewal Party. He was also a deputy to Parliament, having been elected in several legislatures. In 2002, he held the position of mayor of Bissau.
