The Minister of Finance, Fernando Medina, said that social support "never" is comprehensive enough to completely mitigate the cost of living increase. The statements came on the sidelines of a visit to Coliseu do Porto, where he was questioned about the measures announced on Tuesday.
Fernando Medina was confronted about whether the reduction of income tax up to the 6th bracket and the bonus for pensioners would be sufficient to help Portuguese families cope with the price increase.
The official acknowledged that, although the measures represent a significant effort by the Government, no set of support measures can fully cover the impact of the cost of living increase on Portuguese families.
The fiscal measures announced on Tuesday include a reduction of income tax for the lowest brackets and an extraordinary payment for pensionists, in a context of high inflation that has pressured family budgets.
