Ukrainian drones hit, this Wednesday, an industrial facility in the remote Yamalo-Nenets region of the Russian Arctic, almost 3 thousand kilometers from the border with Ukraine. The attack was considered the most distant and bold demonstration of Kyiv's military prowess inside Russian territory, adding to dozens of actions carried out in other areas of the country in recent months.
The target was the facility in Novy Urengoy, known as the informal gas capital of Russia. According to Dmitry Artyukhov, governor of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District — a region responsible for 80% of the country's natural gas production — the attack caused a fire at the facility, although he did not specify the extent of the damage or the activity carried out at the hit location. A federal government representative confirmed to the RIA agency that it was a fuel and energy complex.
Moscow promised a harsh response to the attack. Hungary, for its part, decided to expel 10 Russian diplomats from its territory, classifying their activities as "unacceptable," in a move that may be related to the diplomatic tensions generated by the conflict.
