A 65-year-old North American pilgrim died on Sunday while walking the Camino de Santiago, in Belinho, in the municipality of Esposende. Jill Marie McLaughlin was undertaking the pilgrimage when she suddenly died in that parish.
The news was later confirmed by the family, who did not provide further details about the case for now. The pilgrim's family did not reveal additional information about the circumstances of the death.
The Esposende Fire Brigade was called to the scene, but the pilgrim already showed no vital signs upon the rescuers' arrival. The competent authorities were alerted to the incident.
This is not the first fatality recorded on the Camino de Santiago in Portuguese territory. The route that passes through Esposende is part of the Portuguese Way, one of the most popular pilgrimage routes.
