Indonesian rescue teams searched on Wednesday (9) for eight missing people after a boat lost contact while heading to the volcanic island of Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait. The vessel had departed from Carita, in Banten province, carrying five photojournalists, two crew members and a tourist guide.
The last message was received by family members of one of the journalists at 6:13 PM on Monday (7), informing that the group had reached the waters near the volcano. The last known location of the boat was about 18.5 kilometers from the coast. As of Wednesday, the teams had not been able to locate the vessel.
The journalists work for the state Antara agency, the Turkish Anadolu agency and other local and international outlets. Al Amrad, head of the Banten Search and Rescue Office, confirmed the information about the disappearance.
Although the initial eruption of the volcano ended on Sunday, Anak Krakatau continues registering activity. The search continues in the Sunda Strait to locate the eight missing.
