The family of Maria Augusta Abreu da Cunha Fernandes, 68 years old, missing since September 2 in Rubiães, Paredes de Coura, was targeted in an extortion attempt. The family received a photograph allegedly showing Maria Augusta, accompanied by a message demanding a ransom payment of 1500 euros.
The photograph was considered fake by authorities, with suspicions that it was manipulated using Artificial Intelligence. The alleged kidnapping was also considered false, and the case was referred to the Judicial Police, which opened an investigation to investigate the circumstances of the extortion attempt, as well as the origin of the photograph and the message sent to the family.
Ground searches have been reduced in recent days. The GNR has already demobilized the search resources, only maintaining sporadic passage of a patrol in the area, while the Voluntary Firefighters of Paredes de Coura continue with two elements on the ground. A movement organized by locals also continues to conduct searches with volunteers.
Authorities continue to appeal to the public to report any information that may help locate Maria Augusta, through the number 968 711 360 or the Territorial Post of the GNR of Paredes de Coura, through 251 782 123.
