Lawyer Matthew Exton, 43, was convicted of attempted homicide, aggravated assault and firearms crimes after storming a restaurant in Ohio, United States, to attack his ex-wife. The crime occurred on April 11, 2025. The sentencing hearing is scheduled for September 21 of this year.

According to the article, Matthew spotted his ex-wife having dinner with family at the establishment, ordered a drink at the bar and, upon leaving, spat toward her table. Shortly after, he returned armed and advanced toward the victim with the intent to shoot.

The tragedy was only averted because the attacker forgot to disengage the safety lock on the pistol, which was loaded with one bullet in the chamber and seven more in the magazine. Upon realizing the failed attempt, a waiter acted quickly and tackled Matthew, allowing customers and staff to restrain him.

The prosecutor in the case, Julia Bates, highlighted the severity of the action and the courage of those present in intervening during the attack.
