Atlético de Madrid player misses Champions debut due to red card received in 2024; understand what happened

Spanish striker Arnau Ortiz, 24 years old, is suspended and will not be able to play in Atlético de Madrid's Champions League debut against Liverpool on Wednesday at Anfield. The punishment is the result of a red card received on August 15, 2024, when the player was still playing for Śląsk Wrocław in Poland.

The incident happened during the second leg of the third preliminary round of the Europa Conference League against St. Gallen. Ortiz was sent off and received a one-match suspension in UEFA-organized competitions. At that time, Śląsk Wrocław was eliminated from the tournament.

Since the Polish team was eliminated from the tie and Ortiz has not played in any UEFA European competition since then, the punishment remained pending for over two years. The sanction has only resurfaced now, precisely at the first opportunity for the striker to participate in the Champions League.

The suspension applied in the Europa Conference League is also valid for other UEFA-organized club competitions, which includes the Champions League. Ortiz will have to serve the penalty on Wednesday before he can make his debut in the top club competition in Europe.
