The centralization model of television rights in Portuguese football continues to generate strong debate, with Benfica taking a firm stance on the issue. Benfica's SAD vice-president, Nuno Catarino, an ally of president Rui Costa, spoke about the topic in an exclusive interview with BTV.
Nuno Catarino expressed serious concerns regarding the future of the sector, stating that both he and president Rui Costa have been warning about this situation on various occasions, both at the League assembly and in appropriate forums.
The Benfica official criticized the current formula for the distribution of television rights and explained the reasons that led Benfica to file a formal petition with the Assembly of the Republic. According to Catarino, the petition was filed because the club believes it is following a recipe from ten or 15 years ago for a reality that no longer corresponds to the present.
Nuno Catarino also considered the centralization project under discussion to be anachronistic, arguing that the model needs to be updated to the current circumstances of Portuguese football.
