Nearly two thousand flights cancelled due to technical failure at UK airports

cbn9 September 2026 at 10:43

Nearly two thousand flights were cancelled in the United Kingdom by Wednesday morning (9th) due to a technical failure at UK airports, according to aviation analytics firm Cirium. The situation is caused by a problem in the system of the National Air Traffic Service (NATS), which provides air traffic control services for 15 airports in the United Kingdom.

Although the technical problem has been resolved, chaos in flights persists for the second consecutive day. Other flights suffered delays, causing disruptions for tens of thousands of passengers travelling to and from the United Kingdom.

NATS Director Martin Rolfe ruled out a cyber attack as the cause of the major disruption. He told the BBC he believes the cause would be something different from previous incidents.

The air traffic control company was widely condemned following the disruption. Yvonne Moynihan, Managing Director of Wizz Air UK, declared to Sky News her feelings regarding NATS.
