Three jurors from the Lindsay Clancy trial revealed behind-the-scenes details from the deliberations that almost resulted in her acquittal. Clancy, a 35-year-old nurse, was accused of killing her three children - aged 5, 3, and 8 months - by strangling them in early January 2023 while her husband was at work.
The defense argued that Clancy suffered from postpartum psychosis and other mental health issues, including borderline personality disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. The lawyers contended that she lacked the mental capacity to understand the gravity of her actions at the time of the crimes.
The deliberations were marked by tears and heated discussions among the jurors. The majority was inclined to accept the insanity defense and vote for Clancy's acquittal, believing she was not mentally capable of understanding that she was committing a crime.
However, one male juror was the only one to oppose the innocence verdict, preventing the case from ending with an acquittal verdict due to insanity. With this single dissenting vote, the case proceeded to a new phase of deliberations.
