Unusual heat caused Nepal glacier to collapse and trigger deadly avalanche, scientist says

Scientists warn that an unprecedented heat wave for this time of year caused a glacier in Nepal to collapse, triggering a deadly avalanche in the region on August 26. Meteorological data analyzed by scientist Robert Rohde from the Berkeley Earth organization shows that the glacier at 5,200 meters altitude recorded average temperatures of about 5°C between August 21 and 26 — an exceptionally high value, as in more than 55 years of records, thermometers never exceeded 4°C during this period. Although the analysis revealed temperatures far above normal, researchers have yet to establish a direct link between the extreme heat and the avalanche.
