Elevated volcanic alert to V1 at the Furnas volcano in the Azores

SAPO Notícias9 September 2026 at 00:30

The Azores Seismovolcanic Information and Surveillance Centre (CIVISA) today elevated the volcanic alert level to V1 at the Furnas volcano, located on the island of São Miguel, in the Azores archipelago.

The V1 level means that the volcanic system is in a metastable equilibrium phase, indicating a state of volcanic activity that requires careful monitoring, although it does not represent an imminent eruption.

The reason for this elevation is related to a significant increase in seismic activity recorded in the Furnas volcano region, which led CIVISA to consider it necessary to increase the level of surveillance and alert.

CIVISA is the body responsible for seismovolcanic monitoring and surveillance in the Azores, an archipelago that has several active volcanoes and a history of eruptive activity.
