Elevated volcanic alert to V1 at the Furnas volcano in the Azores

The Centro de Informação e Vigilância Sismovulcânica dos Açores (CIVISA) elevated today the volcanic alert level to V1 at Furnas volcano, on São Miguel island, in the Azores. Level V1 means that the volcanic system is in a metastable equilibrium phase.

The decision to raise the alert was made due to a significant increase in seismic activity in the region. According to a statement issued by CIVISA, since 11:47 local time (time that corresponds to one hour ahead of Lisbon) there has been an increase in seismic activity at the volcano.

CIVISA is the organization responsible for monitoring and surveillance of seismovolcanic activity in the Azores archipelago, a region that has several active volcanoes. Furnas volcano, located on São Miguel island, is one of the most monitored volcanoes in the archipelago due to its eruptive history and the presence of significant geothermal activity.
