Middle East: Rubio regrets tensions in the West Bank but rules out sanctions on Israelis

Now8 September 2026 at 21:42

The United States ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, was described as a longstanding fervent defender of Israeli settlers. Rubio regretted the tensions in the West Bank but ruled out the possibility of imposing sanctions on Israelis.

Huckabee had denounced in August certain acts of violence by settlers against Palestinian families in the West Bank, classifying them as acts of terrorism.

This position contrasts with the posture previously assumed by the ambassador, who now faces criticism for the apparent contradiction between his past statements and his current position as the diplomatic representative of the US in Israel.

When in Portugal? This European country gave up on a system similar to Volta and there are several reasons

France abandoned plans to implement a mandatory national deposit and refund system for plastic bottles, similar to the Portuguese Volta, opting to allow each region to develop its own collection solutions. The decision, announced after three months of meetings with municipalities, companies and recycling operators, came in part due to opposition from city councils, which feared losing revenue from investments made in sorting centers and recycling points, in addition to contesting the so-called "monetization of waste." In Portugal, the Volta system remains operational since April, despite reported difficulties, with the Government announcing increased enforcement and more machines to address problems of full equipment and demand for packaging at recycling points.
