The energy situation has deeply impacted the daily lives of Cubans, leaving many families frequently in the dark. The Juraguá nuclear power plant, located on the southern coast of the island, was conceived as a solution to this chronic problem. The project was funded by the Soviet Union and was thought to be able to supply 15% of Cuba's electricity needs. However, the ambitious project was never completed and currently lies in ruins, having been abandoned for decades.
