Under pressure to fight trafficking, Rubio meets with Colombia's president at start of South America trip

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in Colombia on Tuesday as the first stop of a visit to allies in South America. This trip combines pressure from the White House to take action against drug cartels with President Donald Trump's support for governments that follow his course.

Before arriving in Barranquilla, Rubio confirmed Peru's accession to the "Americas Shield" — a regional alliance of countries led by right-wing governments. This was the latest step in his visit.

Rubio met with Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella at the regional presidential headquarters in Barranquilla. Both politicians did not make initial statements to the press before the start of the meeting.
