Iceland summoned the United States ambassador for a formal protest after American President Donald Trump published a provocative map on the Truth Social network. In the map, the US flag appears overlaid on the territories of Iceland, Greenland, Canada, Mexico, and Caribbean countries. The post contained no written commentary.
The Icelandic government condemned the publication as an insult to Icelanders, Canadians, and Greenlanders. Iceland's Prime Minister, Kristrun Frostadottir, said there is nothing funny or normal about mocking the sovereignty of nations.
The ambassador's summons took place one day after the map was published. Icelanders have shown caution regarding Trump's previous statements about acquiring Greenland, a territory belonging to Denmark, and other expansionist intentions.
