Diário de Coimbra8 September 2026 at 17:00

A man was accused of perpetrating 36 "Hello dad, hello mom" type scams, managing to obtain a total amount of almost 68 thousand euros. This type of fraudulent scheme consists of contacting victims, usually parents or family members, sending messages asking for money on behalf of children or other family members who supposedly need urgent help.

The scheme worked through the sending of text messages in which the scammer posed as a family member in difficulty, requesting money transfers or bank details. The victims, worried about the well-being of their children, ended up falling for the deception and making the requested payments.

The authorities identified 36 victims of this scheme, all of them deceived by the same person. The total amount obtained through these scams is around 68 thousand euros, representing a significant loss for the affected families.

The man was formally accused and the case went to trial, where he will have to answer for the crimes of qualified fraud and unauthorized access to personal data that he used to convince the victims.
