Almada hospital says it was not notified by IGAS

Observador8 September 2026 at 19:41

The Inspectorate-General of Health Activities (IGAS) opened an inspection action against the Garcia de Orta Hospital in Almada. This action was triggered following the suspension of the voluntary termination of pregnancy consultation at this hospital unit.

The Garcia de Orta Hospital is part of the Local Health Unit (ULS) Almada-Seixal. The ULS has now clarified that it did not receive any official notification from IGAS regarding this inspection action.

The suspension of the voluntary termination of pregnancy consultation generated controversy and led to intervention from the health authority, which ordered the resumption of the service. The Ministry of Health is also reported to have suspended the hospital's board president.
