Environmental defense associations defend that Lagoa dos Salgados, in Algarve, should be classified as a natural reserve. The area in question has more than 400 hectares and spans two municipalities. To the east, in the municipality of Albufeira, it includes Lagoa dos Salgados and the Espiche stream. To the west, in the municipality of Silves, it encompasses the Alcantarilha stream. The territory proposed for protection also includes the dune system and the surrounding agricultural areas.
