Jornal Económico8 September 2026 at 16:55

Deloitte Legal Telles advised footballer Gustavo Varela on his permanent transfer from Sport Lisboa e Benfica to A.C. Monza, of Italy. The law firm accompanied the athlete throughout the entire process, providing legal advice on the negotiation and formalization of the contractual instruments associated with the operation, ensuring the protection of his interests.

The operation was coordinated by José Gomes Mendes, counsel and head of the Sports Law practice at Deloitte Legal Telles, who led the legal advice to the player and the coordination with Deloitte Legal Italy on the various legal matters inherent to the transaction. In the context of the execution of the employment contract between Gustavo Varela and A.C. Monza, Deloitte Legal Telles worked in close collaboration with Deloitte Legal Italy, represented by Andrea Bozza, Of Counsel and coordinator of the Football practice, and by Vincenzo Calandrelli, lawyer specialized in Sports Law.

This is an international operation that involved the coordination of different legal and regulatory frameworks and that reflects, according to the firm, the growing complexity of the global professional sports market. This joint work enabled integrated and coordinated legal support across both jurisdictions, ensuring a response consistent and aligned with the specialization standards of the Deloitte Legal network.

The firm explains that this operation reinforces Deloitte Legal Telles' experience in accompanying athletes and other sports sector agents in cross-border operations, combining specialized legal knowledge, client proximity, and the multidisciplinary and international capacity of the Deloitte Legal network.

Gas price in Europe hits three-year highs due to Middle East conflict

Natural gas prices on the European market reached their highest level since January 2023 this Tuesday, exceeding 76 euros per megawatt-hour, a rise of more than 4% driven by the Middle East conflict. Gas has appreciated more than 140% in Europe since the beginning of the attacks between the United States and Iran, at the end of February. The concern also relates to the possible risk of toll charges for passage through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's main routes for gas and oil transport, which led the United Arab Emirates to state that this constitutes a "red line". In parallel, the price of a barrel of Brent approached 100 dollars. The rise in energy prices increases inflationary pressure, which could lead the European Central Bank to raise interest rates again at its meeting on Thursday. The European Commission stated that, despite gas storage levels being lower than in previous years, there is currently no immediate risk to supply in the EU.
