Researchers from Madeira participate in underwater archaeology campaign in Greece

The researchers from Madeira Marco Freitas and Joana Santos, both linked to the Centre for Modern Archaeology Studies (CEAM), participated during the month of August in an international maritime archaeology campaign on the island of Aegina, in Greece. The participation of these researchers is part of the latest campaign of the "Aegina Harbour City Project", having been carried out at the invitation of the team responsible for the project.

The work focused on the study of the remains of the ancient port complex of the city of Aegina. This year's work focused especially on the recording and documentation of archaeological materials found in the waters surrounding the island.

This international collaboration represents an opportunity for CEAM researchers to contribute to the advancement of knowledge about ancient port infrastructure in the Mediterranean region, while also reinforcing the integration of the Madeiran institution in European research networks.

MENTAL HEALTH PROJECT COVERED 280 YOUNG PEOPLE IN THREE TRANSMONTANA MUNICIPALITIES

The project (De)Construct, (Re)Think, (Re)Educate, promoted by the Portuguese Union of Mutualities, involved 280 young people aged 10 to 19 in Bragança, Macedo de Cavaleiros and Alfândega da Fé, in its first year of implementation, covering 20 classes from the 2nd and 3rd cycles and secondary education. The project focuses on promoting mental health and developing socio-emotional skills, working on areas such as self-esteem, emotional management, psychological well-being and interpersonal relationships. Co-financed by the European Union through Norte 2030 and Portugal 2030, it also has the support of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and is preparing to continue for the 2026/2027 school year.

Working sitting on tatami reduces anxiety and increases performance, new Japanese study shows

A new study from Kyushu University in Japan, published in the journal Scientific Reports, revealed that working sitting on tatami mats can reduce anxiety and increase performance in tasks requiring concentration. Researchers found that this traditional Japanese flooring promotes increased brain activity in regions linked to engagement and focus. Additionally, participants reported lower tension and anxiety during activities. Professor Kuniyoshi Shimizu, from the Faculty of Agriculture, explained that the team had previously demonstrated the relaxing effects of aromatic compounds in Igusa (tatami material) and that this time sought to explore other benefits such as mood, stress resilience, and task engagement.
