UA welcomes new Medical students at a special ceremony

The Department of Medical Sciences at the University of Aveiro welcomed the new students of the Integrated Master's in Medicine during an inspiring session that took place on the first day of the UA Welcome Week for the 2026-2027 academic year. The event was marked by some novelties, including the signing of a protocol with Casa Hermes Foundation.

The ceremony was attended by faculty members from the department, as well as the directors of the Local Health Units that are part of the Egas Moniz Health Alliance Clinical Academic Centre, known by the acronym EMHA. The Directorate-General for Health also attended the reception event for the new students.

The main objective of this session was to welcome the new future doctors who are now beginning their academic journey at the University of Aveiro, at a time when the institution's Medical course continues to train professionals for the health sector.

Environmental organizations appeal for the urgent creation of the Salgados Lagoon Nature Reserve

Nine non-governmental environmental organizations appealed for the urgent creation of the Salgados Lagoon Nature Reserve, in the Algarve, an area of more than 400 hectares that includes various wetland areas and which was under public consultation in early 2021 but never progressed. The ENGOs alert that the lack of integrated management has caused deaths of fish, birds, and crabs in the Ribeira de Alcantarilha, due to botulism episodes caused by extreme heat and low water levels. The zone hosts 12 habitats of community interest, including coastal lagoons, 13 threatened plant species, and various endangered animal species, such as the ferruginous duck and the purple heron. The organizations demand that the classification as a nature reserve be made urgently, allowing the prevention, monitoring, and integrated management of the entire system.

Trees also have body awareness: they correct their posture to guide growth

A study published in the journal Science reveals that trees have the ability to perceive the shape and position of their own bodies, a quality called proprioception, until now mainly associated with animals. Although they have no muscles or nervous system, trees use this "body awareness" to correct their posture and guide their growth adaptively. The study demonstrates that this ability allows trees to respond to external stimuli, such as wind, adjusting their structure in a surprisingly sophisticated manner.
