The Universities of Minho and Lisbon are organizing, from September 12 to 16, the 41st SMYTE (Small Meeting on Yeast Transport and Energetics) at the Museu de Arte Contemporânea Nadir Afonso (Nadir Afonso Museum of Contemporary Art), in Chaves. The event brings together about 80 national and international specialists in the areas of cell transport, bioenergetics, metabolism, disease and biotechnology, in partnership with the municipality of Chaves. The opening session takes place on the 12th, at 6:30 PM, at the Hotel Premium Chaves, while the closing ceremony is scheduled for the 15th, at 7:00 PM, at the Museu Nadir Afonso, with the presence of the president of the Municipality of Chaves, Nuno Vaz.
The organizing committee is composed of Sandra Paiva, from the School of Sciences at the University of Minho, Catarina Prista, from the Instituto Superior de Agronomia, and Miguel Teixeira, from the Instituto Superior Técnico. The five-day program features about fifty invited speakers who will analyze central themes of cellular and molecular biology, including the structure and function of transporters, membrane dynamics, cell signaling and trafficking, organelle function, metabolism, stress response, aging, disease, evolution, biotechnology and metabolic engineering.
SMYTE stands out for its close and interactive format, which favors the exchange of ideas and new international collaborations. The event also features the participation of doctoral students and young researchers, who will have direct contact with world-renowned scientists such as Elizabeth Miller (University of Dundee), Christopher Burd (Yale University), George Diallinas (University of Athens) and Karl Kuchler (University of Vienna).
This 41st edition has the support of various national and international entities, including the European Molecular Biology Organization, the Luso-American Foundation for Development, the Embassy of Austria in Lisbon and the Portuguese Society of Microbiology.
