Almost half of Portuguese youth uses Artificial Intelligence tools for studying. According to PISA data, 48% of 15-year-old students surveyed in Portugal said they use AI chatbots to learn, search, write summaries or compose texts, revealing a growing adoption of this technology in the educational context.
The study was conducted by the OECD and reveals that Portugal is among the countries with the highest AI usage among students. Young people primarily use these tools as support for studying and completing school assignments.
However, the OECD report warns about the negative effects of digital distraction on students' academic performance. Excessive technology use and dependence on AI tools can compromise students' concentration ability and intellectual autonomy.
Given these risks, the OECD recommends changes in classrooms to better integrate technology in a pedagogically appropriate way, ensuring that AI is used as a complement to learning and not as a substitute for critical thinking and academic effort.
