The 44-year-old man responded in silence at the Judicial Court of Leiria, choosing not to make a statement. The defendant faces 36 crimes of qualified fraud and has been committed for trial.
According to the indictment, the suspect posed as the victims' son, sending fraudulent messages to obtain money. To carry out the scheme, he activated 37 SIM cards with false identities.
The Public Prosecution argues that the objective was the "unlawful enrichment" of the defendant, through deceiving the victims. The trial continues without the cooperation of the accused's testimony.
