The Porto Municipal Council approved the urgent felling of 19 trees on Avenida dos Aliados, one of the main arteries of the city. The decision was made following the fall of a tree during the final stage of the Volta a Portugal cycling race.
The local authority carried out an extraordinary assessment of the tree population on the avenue, which identified safety problems that justify the immediate intervention. The municipality argues that the measure is necessary to prevent similar accidents in the future.
The Porto City Council also stated that there is a replacement plan for the trees over the next two years, aiming to restore the number of specimens on Avenida dos Aliados. The goal is to ensure both the safety of citizens and the maintenance of the avenue's aesthetics.
