A uniform and four generations in Paredes de Coura

Alto Minho8 September 2026 at 12:01

José Carvalho, a volunteer firefighter at the Paredes de Coura Volunteer Firefighters, has a connection to the corps that spans four generations of his family. His grandfather and father were firefighters, and he himself joined the corps at age 10, initially through the marching band, starting to wear the uniform at 18. At 57 years old, he already has 35 years of service, marked by fires, accidents, and rescues that remain in memory.

José Carvalho's two daughters followed in his footsteps and are also firefighters. The father states he did not influence them, and it was actually the younger daughter who influenced the older one to join the corps. However, within the fire station, the rules are the same for everyone, and José emphasizes that, as chief, his daughters have no privileges.

Recently decorated, José Carvalho says the recognition is welcome, but guarantees he did not choose this life for medals. "We are not firefighters for medals, but it is always nice to be recognized for what we do," he stated. The firefighter maintains his passion for the uniform intact, considering that "this is truly love for a cause."

The family story may not be over yet. Although he does not yet have grandchildren, José Carvalho confesses he would like his future descendants to also follow the tradition and become firefighters.

Synod: New reports propose changes in the relationship with bishops

The General Secretariat of the Synod published new reports with proposals to change the relationship between dioceses and consecrated life communities, requesting the creation of mandatory diocesan cooperation agreements on mission, formation, gender equality and patrimony management, as well as the appointment of a vicar for consecrated life in each diocese. The second report proposes greater participation of the laity in the preparation of the "ad limina" visits to the Vatican, advocating that a diocesan representation accompany the bishop and that the Holy See establish an independent commission to evaluate the process. These documents, prepared by study groups instituted by the Pope, do not represent final decisions, but indicate directions for operational proposals to be submitted to the Holy Father.
