The intervention at the Caniço junction, in the Cancela area, is expected to be fully completed in October. The announcement was made by the president of the Regional Government of Madeira, Miguel Albuquerque, during a site visit.
The project includes the construction of two roundabouts, the widening of the deck over approximately 150 metres, and the transformation of the current exit into a two-lane road.
Miguel Albuquerque believes the new configuration will increase traffic flow and improve the organization and distribution of vehicles in an area that is used daily by many commuters.
This is described as an "unprecedented" intervention in Portugal, suggesting that the techniques or the scale of the project have no parallel in the rest of the country.
