According to analyst Ramiro Loureiro, from Millennium Investment Banking, European stock exchanges are globally down, pressured by rising oil prices, which raises fears of greater aggressiveness from central banks in raising interest rates to contain inflation, two days before the ECB is due to announce its monetary policy. In Portugal, the PSI manages to buck the external trend, driven by gains in Galp, Jerónimo Martins, pulp and paper companies such as Altri, Semapa and Navigator, and construction firms Mota-Engil and Teixeira Duarte.
In the oil market, WTI rose 2.69% to $93.95 per barrel and Brent advanced 1.73% to $98.67. In the foreign exchange market, the euro depreciated 0.09% against the dollar, settling at $1.1612.
