The heat of recent days should give way to a period of rain and a drop in temperatures in mainland Portugal. A cold front arrives this Tuesday, September 8th, bringing precipitation that may be locally heavy in some areas of the North and Centre of the country. The change will be temporary, but will bring conditions more in line with those usually associated with autumn.
The rain will start in Minho, with the first periods of precipitation expected in the Minho districts between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM. By the end of the day, the frontal system will advance south and east, covering areas of the districts of Viana do Castelo, Braga, Porto, Aveiro, Vila Real, Viseu, Bragança, and Guarda. The Northwest stands out for the greater persistence of rain probability, with values above 90% for more hours.
The highest rainfall accumulations are expected in the district of Viana do Castelo, in the northeast of the Braga district, and in the north of the Vila Real district, with values between 15 and 25 millimetres, especially in the most exposed mountainous areas. In the remaining affected districts, expected amounts will be lower, ranging between approximately 2 and less than 10 millimetres.
After the front passes, polar air should contribute to a drop in temperatures, advancing from northwest to southeast throughout Tuesday and Wednesday. Precipitation may extend beyond Tuesday, reaching areas of Coimbra, Fundão, and Leiria in the early hours of Wednesday, although more dispersed. The temperature drop should have a wider geographical expression than the forecast precipitation.
