The results of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) reveal a significant setback in the academic performance of Portuguese students aged 15. The students from Portugal obtained worse results in Reading compared to the year 2000, the year in which Portugal first participated in this international assessment. This setback represents a worrying reversal in the improvement trajectory that the country had been recording in this subject.

In the area of Mathematics, the results of Portuguese students are close to the levels achieved in 2003, also showing a stagnation or decline in the performance of national students in this fundamental subject. This situation places Portugal in a less favorable position relative to its European and OECD partners.

PISA data, which evaluates 15-year-old students from dozens of countries in the areas of Reading, Mathematics, and Sciences, serves as an important indicator of the quality of the Portuguese educational system. The setback observed raises questions about the factors that may be behind this deterioration in the academic performance of young Portuguese people.
