Ukraine: United Kingdom mobilizes 116 million to reinforce air defense

Jornal Económico8 September 2026 at 10:29

The British government will make available 100 million pounds, equivalent to 116 million euros, to provide Ukraine with air defense capabilities, including Patriot interceptor missiles, before the start of winter. This contribution falls under a NATO program dedicated to supporting Kyiv and will also include large-caliber ammunition and drones, with the aim of helping Ukraine defend itself against Russian attacks during the cold season.

Kyiv warned of the urgent need for Patriot interceptor missiles, manufactured in the United States, as they are the only ones capable of neutralizing Russian ballistic missiles that fly at high speeds on very steep trajectories. However, the United States has drastically reduced supplies to Ukraine, since they need the Patriot systems for the war against Iran.

Russian attacks on Ukrainian territory, namely against Kyiv, have intensified in recent months. On Monday night, new attacks caused two deaths and eight wounded in the Ukrainian capital, after a ceasefire motivated by a visit by American envoys to try to relaunch peace negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv.

The United Kingdom also committed to providing more than 120,000 drones to Ukraine this year, including interceptors that bring down Russian drones, with 25,000 already having been delivered. The British Defense Secretary, Wes Streeting, is expected to chair today, together with his German counterpart Boris Pistorius, a meeting of a group of 50 countries that support Ukraine.
