PISA 2025: Portuguese students' performance worsens and falls back to 2006 levels

SIC Notícias8 September 2026 at 08:51

The results of Portuguese students in PISA 2025 worsened significantly, falling back to levels close to those observed in 2006 in Mathematics, Reading, and Sciences. This decline represents a complete reversal of the gains achieved over the previous years.

The study, conducted by the OECD, is the world's largest international education assessment and allows for comparing students' performance across different countries. Portugal, which had been improving consecutively in previous editions of the program, now suffers an expressive setback.

The observed decline affects all three areas assessed by PISA, indicating a widespread phenomenon not limited to a specific subject. This result places Portugal on a downward trajectory after a prolonged period of academic progress.

"It is very cheap to live here": Briton moved to tourist destination 1 hour from Portugal and was won over by the cheap cost of living

A young British man from Brighton, Harry Poulton, moved to Benidorm, on Spain's Mediterranean coast, just one hour's flight from Portugal, and was impressed by the low cost of living. At 24, he shares his experience on social media, highlighting that an English breakfast costs only £2.50 and a beer around 87 pence (one euro). According to Harry, a week in Benidorm is cheaper than staying in the United Kingdom, mainly in food and drink expenses. Kiev warned of the urgency of these means, the only ones capable of neutralizing Russian ballistic missiles, although the United States has drastically reduced supplies to Ukraine. The United Kingdom also committed to providing more than 120,000 drones this year, having already delivered 25,000. Russian attacks against Ukraine, namely Kiev, have intensified in recent months, with new attacks on Monday causing two deaths and eight wounded.
