Hospital Garcia de Orta, in Almada, was the subject of an inspection by the Inspectorate-General of Health Activities (IGAS). The investigation arose following complaints regarding the interruption of voluntary pregnancy termination consultations.
The Almada-Seixal Local Health Unit, to which the hospital belongs, stopped providing voluntary pregnancy termination consultations at the beginning of August. This decision affected patients' access to this reproductive health service.
The interruption of IVG consultations at the hospital raised concerns about the impact on women's access to this legally protected right in Portugal. IGAS then decided to open an inspection process to assess the situation.
