Young Josué Maia, 24, known as "Boxista" (Boxer), was shot dead at a bar on Rua Escura, in Porto, last May, during a brawl. The suspect of the crime was acquitted at a trial held in June, generating indignation among the victim's family.
Josué Maia's family now expresses strong outrage at the defendant's acquittal and demands justice for the homicide. The relatives do not accept the verdict and intend for the case to be reassessed by the competent authorities.
The crime occurred in the context of a brawl at a nightspot on Rua Escura, one of Porto's historic areas. The suspect, who became involved in an argument with the victim, shot Josué Maia, causing his death.
The Public Prosecutor's Office will have to decide whether to appeal the acquittal sentence, in a process that has generated great public controversy and pressure from the victim's family and the local community for justice to be served.
