Artillery Regiment No. 5 (RA5) completed the 2nd RAVEN B DDL Unmanned Aerial System Operator Course of 2026, reinforcing the Portuguese Army's capability in the operation of unmanned aerial systems. The training took place between August 10 and September 4, 2026, at RA5, the unit responsible for training in this area. Three military personnel participated in the course, which aimed to prepare new operators for the use of the RAVEN B DDL system.
Over several weeks, the trainees acquired knowledge in fundamental areas such as mission preparation, planning and execution, system operation, flight safety procedures and exploitation of sensor capabilities. The practical component was particularly important, with the execution of various flight missions and simulation of different employment scenarios.
The qualification of new operators represents another step in strengthening the Portuguese Army's UAS capability, at a time when unmanned aerial systems are becoming increasingly important in the current operational environment. These assets play a relevant role in surveillance and reconnaissance missions, target acquisition and support to the conduct of operations.
