The Pulmonology Department of the Local Health Unit of the Aveiro Region (ULS RA) began performing bronchoscopies with anesthetic support at the beginning of this month, now doing so on a more regular basis. The department director, João Cravo, cited in a press release, considers this to be "an important evolution in the quality of care" provided by the hospital.
According to João Cravo, the possibility of performing these procedures with anesthesiology support allows them to be made significantly more comfortable, safer, and simpler. The statement indicates that bronchoscopy is an examination that can be difficult to tolerate and is often associated with anxiety and fear on the part of patients.
The work between the pulmonology and anesthesiology departments to perform the examination with sedation was prepared over the past few months, and the hospital unit is now ready to maintain a more regular collaboration. Bronchoscopy is an endoscopic examination that allows visualization of the interior of the trachea, bronchi, and respiratory airways, helping to identify chronic coughs, infections, bleeding, and tumors.
