IPO-Porto performed more than 73 thousand Radiotherapy sessions in 2025, treating 4,768 new patients in a service that is presented by the institute itself as the largest on the Iberian Peninsula. The information was released on Monday, Radiation Therapy Day, an initiative that aimed to value the work of professionals in the area and raise awareness about the importance of this treatment in the fight against cancer.
The service currently has nine linear accelerators and a technological modernization process is underway within the scope of the Recovery and Resilience Plan. Five linear accelerators are being replaced with more advanced equipment, with two new devices already operational in January and a third nearing completion of installation.
The overall planned investment is approximately 38 million euros for renewal of heavy medical equipment, qualification of facilities, and technological modernization. The institute's report and accounts confirms the existence of a 10.6 million euro contract for the acquisition of the five linear accelerators.
On Radiation Therapy Day, the service professionals celebrated the date with patients, wearing t-shirts and distributing orange ribbons. In addition to the renewal of the accelerators, IPO-Porto is also preparing the future National Protontherapy Center, with two devices that should begin treating patients in 2029.
