A new species of terrestrial snake discovered in New Guinea was named in honor of Slash, the legendary guitarist of Guns N' Roses. The species was given the scientific name Lielaphis slashi, in reference to its common English name — Slash's terrestrial snake, or the terrestrial snake of Slash.
Slash has always been passionate about reptiles and is a great supporter of zoos and museums. The lead author of the article describing the new species is Sara Ruane, from the Field Museum, where a photograph of her with the musician is displayed.
Slash himself stated that he was extremely honored and humble with this nomination, considering it a truly exciting moment, something he never imagined would happen.
Slash's interest in reptiles dates back to his childhood: he revealed that Guns N' Roses was one of his favorite bands since first grade and that, by fifth grade, he had told his teacher that he wanted to be a herpetologist — a scientist who studies reptiles — when he grew up.
