Lisbon recorded a significant improvement in air quality in 2025, becoming the first year since the Covid-19 pandemic that the city meets the nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) limit value at all monitoring stations.
This compliance also extends to the Avenida da Liberdade station, one of the busiest areas in the Portuguese capital, which for years represented a challenge in the city's air quality.
The Covid-19 pandemic, which occurred between 2020 and 2022, had provided an exceptional reduction in emissions and concentrations of atmospheric pollutants, due to the decrease in economic activity and vehicle traffic. After that period, Lisbon had not managed to meet the limit values at all monitoring stations.
The Lisbon City Council (CML) highlighted this achievement as an important milestone for quality of life in the city, resulting from efforts to improve environmental conditions implemented in recent years.
