JPP calls for tax reduction to lower fuel and gas cylinder prices

dnoticias.pt7 September 2026 at 17:14

Together By the People (JPP) submitted to the Assembly of the Republic a Resolution Bill recommending that the Government immediately reduce the tax burden on fuels. The proposal was presented by MP Filipe Sousa, who advocates for the creation of an automatic mechanism to reduce ISP (Excise Duty on Petroleum Products) to address the escalating prices.

The party also proposes measures to control profit margins and protect consumers in the face of the constant rise in prices. The goal is to ease the financial impact that fuels and gas cylinders have had on Portuguese families.

Filipe Sousa highlighted the price difference that exists between Portugal and Spain, including the autonomous regions of Madeira and the Azores. This comparison serves as an argument to reinforce the need for fiscal intervention to reduce costs for consumers.

The JPP's resolution bill now awaits consideration and voting in the Assembly of the Republic, where MPs will decide whether or not to recommend to the Executive the implementation of the fiscal measures proposed by the party.
