Judge José Luis Calama, who investigates the so-called Zapateo case at the Spanish National Court, considered a "contradiction" that the former government president opposes UDEF investigating his accounts, when during his statement at that court "he expressed with notable conviction giving universal authorization to examine his accounts".
This assessment is contained in a court order of September 7, in which the magistrate dismisses the appeal presented by the lawyer of the former socialist leader against the investigation procedures of his bank accounts.
The case involves Judge Calama, UDEF as the investigating body, and former Spanish government president José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, who gave broad consent for the analysis of his finances when he testified at the National Court.
The judge bases his decision on the contradiction between the collaborative posture that Zapateo initially demonstrated by offering "universal authorization" to examine his accounts, and the subsequent opposition through a judicial appeal to stop the investigation by the Economic and Tax Crime Unit.
